Every corner of any military-adjacent hobby has its own alphabet soup, and night vision is no exception. Feel free to use this page as a bookmark or quick reference to terms you may be unfamiliar with or need to brush up on.

Devices & Systems
NV / NVD / NOD — Night Vision / Night Vision Device / Night Observation Device. General term for any light-amplifying optic.
PVS-14 — The standard single-tube monocular. The default entry point for most people in this hobby and basically standard issue NVD throughout the GWOT to present.
PVS-31 — High-end dual-tube binocular with independently articulating pods. Premium tier, premium price, but becoming more common.
GPNVG — Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle. Four-tube "quad" system with a much wider field of view (~97° vs. the standard ~40°) than a standard dual-tube setup. Exceptionally Gucci but with its own pros/cons.
MUM-14 — Functionally similar to a PVS-14, but uses a different mounting interface than the standard threaded PVS-14 housing.
DTNVS / DTNVG — Dual Tube Night Vision System/Goggle. General category for lightweight articulating dual-tube housings.
BNVD — Binocular Night Vision Device. Both a general category and a specific housing family.
Lasers & Aiming Devices
LAM — Laser Aiming Module. The general category term for a weapon-mounted device combining an IR/visible laser and usually an IR illuminator. This is what we build but also somewhat colloquial with "PEQ" or "laser".
PEQ-15 / ATPIAL — The standard-issue military LAM. Sold to civilians in a power-limited configuration, usually labeled ATPIAL-C.
PEQ-16 — Somewhat rarer big brother to the PEQ-15 that includes a white light.
DBAL — Dual Beam Aiming Laser. Steiner's LAM line (DBAL-A2, DBAL-A3, DBAL-D2, etc.).
MAWL — Modular Advanced Weapon Laser. B.E. Meyers' high-end LAM, known for VCSEL-based illumination and unique offset form factor.
NGAL — Next Generation Aiming Laser. L3Harris's compact high-performance LAM to succeed the PEQ-15 and -16.
IR laser — Infrared laser pointer. Invisible to the naked eye, clearly visible under NODs. Used for aiming.
IR illuminator — An infrared floodlight, separate function from the aiming laser, used to light up a scene for NODs to pick up.
VCSEL — Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser. Produces a cleaner, more even illumination beam than older edge-emitting diodes, with less speckle.
EEL — Edge-Emitting Laser. An older laser diode design where light exits from the edge of the semiconductor chip rather than the surface. Can push comparable or higher raw output than VCSEL, but the beam is typically less clean — more divergence, more astigmatism, more speckle. Common in older and budget illuminator designs; VCSEL was largely developed to fix EEL's beam-quality shortcomings.
LED — Light Emitting Diode. Not a laser — it's a non-coherent light source, and that distinction is the whole reason it shows up so often in illuminators: LED output isn't governed by the same laser classification limits, so a manufacturer can push more raw power through an LED illuminator than a laser-based one without crossing into restricted territory. The tradeoff is beam quality — LED light is broader and more diffuse, without the tight, focusable spot a laser diode produces.
Laser Classifications & Regulation
Laser classes are a federal safety rating, not a marketing tier — every legally sold laser product falls into one of these whether the seller advertises it or not.
There are also two overlapping naming systems you'll see used interchangeably, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from:
FDA / CDRH — The Center for Devices and Radiological Health, the federal body that regulates and classifies laser products sold in the US under 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11. This is the agency whose rules actually dictate what a manufacturer can sell you, and it uses Roman numerals: Class I, II, IIIa, IIIb, IV.
IEC 60825-1 — The international laser safety standard. Uses Arabic numerals: Class 1, 1M, 2, 2M, 3R, 3B, 4. You'll see this system used in most technical writeups and on non-US products.
ANSI Z136 — The American National Standards Institute's laser safety standard. Sets Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) thresholds used by OSHA and safety professionals; distinct from both classification systems above, but related.
Roughly, the two systems line up class-for-class — FDA Class I ≈ IEC Class 1, FDA Class II ≈ IEC Class 2, FDA Class IIIb ≈ IEC Class 3B, FDA Class IV ≈ IEC Class 4. Note: FDA Class IIIa ≈ IEC Class 3R. Same tier, different name, roughly the same power ceiling.
Class 1 — Safe under normal use. Civilian IR aiming lasers are held under roughly 0.7 mW to qualify. Unrestricted, fully legal for civilian sale.
Class 1M — Safe to the naked eye, but hazardous if viewed through optical magnification (a scope, binoculars). Legal status depends on the specific device's FDA variance.
Class 2 — Visible-light lasers only (400–700nm), capped at 1mW, relies on your blink reflex for protection. Doesn't apply to IR — invisible light doesn't trigger a blink.
Class IIIa (FDA) / Class 3R (IEC) — Roughly 1–5mW, minor hazard on direct prolonged viewing. Civilian legal if the specific device is CDRH-compliant.
Class IIIb (FDA) / Class 3B (IEC) — 5–500mW. Direct beam viewing causes immediate eye injury. This is "full power" — restricted to military and law enforcement sale.
Class IV (FDA) / Class 4 (IEC) — Over 500mW. Severe hazard, including skin and fire risk. Industrial, scientific, and Mil/LE only.
"Full power" vs. "civilian legal" — In shorthand, "full power" almost always means Class IIIb/3B. "Civilian legal" almost always means Class 1 or IIIa/3R. There's very little civilian-legal middle ground above that in practice — see our full-power breakdown in the LAM Market Map for why most people don't actually need Class IIIb/3B anyway.
Tube Specs & Technical Terms
IIT — Image Intensifier Tube. The core component that actually amplifies light.
FOM — Figure of Merit. Resolution × SNR. A single summary number — useful but shouldn't be the only thing you look at (see our tube deep-dive for why).
SNR — Signal-to-Noise Ratio. The strongest single predictor of how clean a tube's image is in real darkness.
RES / Resolution — Measured in line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm). Image sharpness.
EBI — Equivalent Background Illumination. The tube's own baseline noise floor with zero light input. Lower is better.
Halo — The ring of bloom around bright light sources (streetlights, muzzle flash). Measured in mm. Smaller is better.
Autogating — Power supply feature that rapidly cycles tube voltage to protect against bright light exposure without operator input.
Manual gain — User-adjustable brightness control.
ABC — Automatic Brightness Control. Circuitry that caps max brightness automatically.
WP / GP — White Phosphor vs. Green Phosphor. Viewing experience difference, not a performance difference (see our tube deep-dive).
IPD — Interpupillary Distance. The spacing between your eyes — relevant for adjusting binocular NODs.
Diopter — The rear ocular lens adjustment that focuses the tube's image to your eyesight.
Objective lens — The front lens that gathers light and focuses it onto the tube.
OMNI — Refers to the US military's omnibus contract specs (OMNI VII, OMNI VIII) that set minimum tube performance standards for government procurement.
Scintillation — The "sparkle" or static visible in a tube image at high gain in real darkness. Normal — see our tube deep-dive for when it's not.
Battery & Power
CR123A — The standard non-rechargeable 3V lithium battery for most LAMs and weapon lights. Long shelf life, holds up well in cold weather. Not cheap per-use, but the reliability tradeoff is why it's still the default.
18650 / 18500 / 18350 — Rechargeable 3.7V lithium-ion cells, named for their dimensions in millimeters (diameter × length). 18650 is the largest and highest capacity, 18350 the smallest and most compact — the size your device takes depends on its battery compartment, not preference.
14500 — A rechargeable 3.7V li-ion cell built to the same physical size as a standard AA, but at more than double the voltage. Don't mix these up with actual AAs in a device not rated for them.
Protected vs. unprotected cells — Protected cells have a small onboard circuit guarding against overcharge, over-discharge, and short circuits. Unprotected cells don't, and rely entirely on the host device to manage that safely. Worth knowing which you're buying.
Parasitic drain — A small continuous current draw that happens even when a device is switched off, slowly killing a battery left installed for weeks or months. Some units are worse about this than others — it's a real, commonly reported complaint on certain legacy mil-spec units.
Low-voltage cutoff (LVC) — A protection circuit that shuts a device off before the battery is drained low enough to damage it. Not every device has this.
mAh (milliamp-hours) — The capacity rating on a battery — roughly, how long it can supply power before running out. Higher isn't automatically better if it doesn't fit your device or use case.
Mounting & Helmet Hardware
J-arm — Offset arm connecting a monocular to a helmet mount, positioning it over one eye.
Dovetail — A wedge-style mount interface, the modern standard for a tight, low-wobble connection (see Wilcox/L4G24)
Bayonet / USGI lug — The older push-button latch mount style that interfaces the NOD to the head-mounted flip mount, still common on legacy setups.
Rhino mount — Legacy USGI helmet-mounted flip mount that utilized the bayonet-style attachment lug. Outdated but still useful.
Shroud — The plate bolted to the front of a helmet that the mount attaches to.
Wilcox / L4G24 — Wilcox Industries is a leading mount manufacturer; the L4G24 is their widely used breakaway dovetail mount and has many meaningful upgrades over the bayonet/Rhino mount.
Bridge — Hardware that pairs two monoculars together on one mount to function as a dual-tube setup.
Counterweight — Rear-helmet weight used to offset the front-heavy balance a mounted NOD creates.
Retention / bungee — Tether between helmet and NOD to prevent total loss if the mount fails or detaches.
